Southmead shows class against Colts

28 Jan by Jon Carpenter

Wessex Wanderers Colts travelled to Pen Park to play table toppers Southmead Reserves. Colts from the first whistle knew this was going to be the toughest test they will face all season against a team that has won every league game and averaging 7 goals a game.

Wessex set up in a 4-1-4-1 formation to try and soak up the pressure and use the pace of Soul Parsons and Dray Collins on the wings to help Joel Winnyi on the counter. A plan that was well executed for the first 20 mins until a poor back pass held up on the sticky pitch allowed the home side striker to sneak ahead of goalkeeper Ben Bloys to make it 1-0.

10 minutes later an attack from Southmead made it 2-0, a very good goal from the home teams winger, who time after time throughout the game cut in on his left to fire the ball in the Wessex net.

A free kick for the Colts allowed debutant Scott Norton-Ashley the chance to hit one from 30 yards, which was flying into the top corner but brilliantly tipped over the bar by the keeper.

Half time 0-2

The second half brought some changes to the Wessex side, bringing in some fresh legs on a heavy pitch. Southmead pressure continued, and a barron of efforts flooded onto the Wessex goal. Some great one on one saves from Bloys. But more goals continued for the table toppers.

At 4-0 down, Wessex changed to a 442, allowing more substitutions with every player getting some much needed minutes in the legs. Unfortunately, the change of shape didn’t help the away team who struggled against an opponent whose quality is way above division 4 level.

Management team of Jon Carpenter and Scott Norton Ashley were proud of the players who never stopped working hard even with the game over midway in the second half.

Final score
Southmead Res 7-0 Wessex Colts.
